Time is Brain #STROKE

October 2026
...

In neurology and emergency medicine, there is one phrase we live by every single day: "Time is Brain." When an acute stroke occurs, nearly two million brain cells are lost every passing minute. Any delay in treatment doesn't just mean a longer hospital stay—it can result in irreversible brain damage or permanent disability.

At Caritas Hospital, we do not leave stroke care to chance. We operate on an active, tightly coordinated Acute Stroke Protocol designed to save every possible second and every possible neuron.

In fact, our care begins even before the patient crosses our doors. When we receive a pre-hospital intimation of an acute stroke through our helpline, our emergency systems are mobilized in advance so that there is zero time delay the moment the ambulance arrives.

Once a patient with a suspected stroke reaches our Emergency Triage, two words set everything in motion: 'Code Silver.'

The moment 'Code Silver' is announced, our entire multidisciplinary stroke team is on high alert. Right in the emergency room, a designated Stroke Nurse immediately takes charge of the patient. Without wasting a single minute, the patient is shifted straight to our CT scan suite. Here, we perform a CT Brain, a Cerebral and Neck Vessel Angiogram, and an advanced Brain Perfusion Study. What makes our CT machine truly remarkable is its advanced perfusion mapping—it allows our doctors to see and map the exact areas of the brain that can still be saved.

How we treat the patient next depends on time and technology:

If the patient arrives within the critical 4.5-hour window period, we immediately initiate IV Thrombolysis—administering clot-busting medication to restore blood flow.

But what about patients who reach the hospital after 4.5 hours? Hope is not lost. If the patient has a Large Vessel Occlusion and our CT perfusion study shows that significant brain tissue is still salvageable, they are immediately wheeled into our Cath Lab for mechanical clot removal.

Saving a life in the emergency room is only the first half of the battle; how we care for the brain afterward defines the patient's quality of life. From the emergency department, the patient is shifted directly to our designated Stroke ICU, where they are managed round-the-clock by expert Neurointensivists.

Recovery starts immediately. Within 24 hours, our Rehabilitation Team assesses the patient and charts out a personalized recovery plan, while our Speech and Swallowing specialists evaluate them to ensure safe nutrition and communication. Once the patient is ready to step down from the ICU, they move into our designated Stroke Ward, surrounded by a team trained specifically for post-stroke recovery.

As medical professionals and as a community, our biggest weapon against stroke is awareness and speed. Recognizing the signs early and calling our pre-hospital stroke helpline allows us to activate Code Silver before the patient even arrives. Because at Caritas Hospital, we know that when we save time, we don't just save a brain—we save a person, a family, and a future.
